The Fourth of July in Brownsville is all you imagine a summer
holiday in rural America to be. The morning begins at 8:00 am
with a pancake breakfast at the park pavilion. Pancakes, eggs,
ham, marionberry syrup, hot coffee, all served with the entertaining
antics of the volunteer fireman pancake flippers and the dancin'
grooves of the serving chicks. In order to ensure the sleepy
heads don't miss out on the vittles, the town leaders send out
the "sound truck" to inform residents their presence
is requested. Join the crowd for an early morning tradition.
Most folks spend the entire day in the park, playing ball
or competing in the horseshoe pitching contest. Dinner is served
in downtown Brownsville at several of our excellent restaurants
and a BBQ chicken dinner is served in the park. As evening approaches,
the old ball field fills with residents and guests, friends
from out of town, school chums who haven't seen each other all
summer. The volunteer fireman pass out ice cream to the youngsters.
Some years we have music; usually bluegrass or country. Some
years we are too busy chatting to notice. When darkness descends,
we feel the BOOM of the fireworks as they fly up to fill the
sky overhead. As the evening ends, we fold up our chairs and
stroll home. Happy our founders had the foresight to give us
a day like this.
